YOU know that you are in Teochew-land when monuments and buildings built by overseas Chinese are as ubiquitous as plain porridge (muay) and pickled olives (gana chye).
In between bowls of those simple staples and feasts of abalone, the hospitable Teochew people of Shantou regaled us with tales of overseas kinsmen who had made good and remembered to channel their wealth back home.
Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka Shing is probably the most well-known name among the flock of first-generation migrants who left Chaozhou in Guangdong province, China, to seek greener pastures.
At the entrance of a village, where a colleague whom I was travelling with has family, stands a shabby pavilion that was built by money sent back by overseas Teochews.
A pre-university institution, the 50-year-old Shantou Traditional Opera School and a hotspring resort are just some of the projects that continue to flourish, with plentiful donations from its generous pool of migrants.

Shantou, an eastern city in Guangdong province, is the gateway to Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shanwei. The Chaozhou and Shantou region is called Chaoshan, and the main dialect spoken in these areas is Teochew.
I personally wouldn’t have visited Shantou myself, being anything but Teochew (I’m a mishmash of Hainanese, Cantonese and Penang-Hokkien).
But my husband (who’s half-Teochew) and I decided to get married on board Jetstar Asia’s inaugural flight to Shantou.
