A company behind plans to open the first hotel in space says it is on target to accept its first paying guests in 2012 despite critics questioning the investment and time frame for the multi-billion dollar project.
The Barcelona-based architects of The Galactic Suite Space Resort say it will cost 3 million euro (S$6.1 million) for a three-night stay at the hotel, with this price including an eight-week training course on a tropical island.

Space tourists at The Galactic Suite Space Resort will see the sun rise 15
times a day and travel around the world every 80 minutes. They would wear
velcro suits so they can crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to
the walls like Spiderman. The cost of a three-night stay? Some $6.1 millon.
Tourists will experience the possibilities of the body in weightlessness. In
the bathroom, participants can float within a transparent sphere in which a
bubble of water of 20 litres will be introduced. The tourist, already trained
to avoid the effects of water in a state of weightlessness, can play with the
bubble dividing it into thousands of bubbles in a never-ending game.
Galactic Suite Ltd, set up in 2007, hopes to start its project with a single
pod in orbit 450 km (280 miles) above the earth, travelling at 30,000 km per
hour, with the capacity to hold four guests and two astronaut-pilots.
Part of the $6.1 million package tourists pay for includes an eight-week
training course on a tropical island.
Space tourists will be instructed in the theory and practice of different
rescue techniques in preparation for potential emergency situations. They will
also experience life-size Galactic Suite Space Resort models and simulators.
Theoretical tuition will include basics in space enviroment physics, chemistry
and physiology
Space tourists will be launched into space aboard the Galactic Suite
Spacecraft, which will then travel to the space resort. The flight will be one
of the main highlights of the experience.
Aboard the craft, space tourists will reach a speed of 28,000 km/h in ten
minutes after rocket ignition. With adrenaline flowing and tension building up,
this will be one of the most exciting moments.
It will take a day and a half to reach the pod.
