#1. AMONG the 10 busiest air hubs in Europe, the Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in
France is the best for shopping, a recent survey showed. According to the study
commissioned by e-commerce website Kelkoo, the Lyon terminal offered customers
the highest average tax free savings at 11.9%, compared to prices at local high
street stores.
#2. Paris' Charles de Gaulle came in second with average tax-free savings of
11.5 per cent.
#3. Amsterdam's Schiphol airport came in third with an average tax-savings of
6.1 per cent.
#4. Frankfurt airport was fourth, offering its shoppers 5.6 per cent discounts
in tax-free prices compared to their high street equivalents.
#5. Taking fifth spot was Britain's Gatwick Airport, which offered 5.6 per cent
average tax-free savings. Gatwick and London's Heathrow terminals were found to
be the most expensive for luxury, fashion & electrical goods, but cheapest for
humdrum stuff like cigarettes, perfume and alcohol.
#6. In sixth spot is Barcelona's airport. The survey said that Spanish airport
stores had the highest prices for health and beauty products.
#7. Madrid's airport.
#8. Rome Fiumicino airport.
#9. Berlin Schoenefeld airport.
#10. Rounding up the list is London's Heathrow, which according to Kelkoo, only
offered 3.1 per cent savings in tax-free pricing. Airport authorities have
however dismissed this report, saying that the prices used were "inaccurate"
and that it included products which were not sold at airport stores.
