Facing threat from Disneyland's Toy Story Land, Hong Kong's Ocean Park recently
opened Thrill Mountain in a bid to stay in the entertainment game.
The themed zone features six new mechanical rides, including a floor-less
roller coaster, which the amusement park claims to be the fastest in Hong Kong.
The Hair Raiser - one of the park's two roller coasters - hurtles at the speed
of 88km/h through many loops, half loops and corkscrews. The floorless roller
coaster allows passengers' legs to dangle in mid-air throughout the ride.
Another thriller is The Flash, a ride that spins you 22m up into the air like a
pendulum, while rotator at 360 degrees.
Situated atop a hill, Thrill Mountain offers views of the South China Sea and
Aberdeen as visitors take the rides. Within the zone, there are also eight
booth games, as well as retail and food and beverage spots.
The opening of Thrill Mountain is part of Ocean Park's HK5.5 billion (S$9.23
million) redevelopment plan, revealed Dr Allan Zeman, Chairman of Ocean Park,
in a press release.
This year, Ocean Park hit a record number of visitors, up by 16 per cent from
previous years.
With the launch in time of the festive season, Ocean Park will also be rolling
out Christmas presentations which will run from now until Jan 2, 2012.
Next year, local students will also have the opportunity to learn about the
physics behind the new roller coaster through the physics programme offered by
Ocean Park Academy.
