MALAYSIA has been asked to come up with a shortlist of possible names for the two pandas that China will loan to Malaysia in 2014.

China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA) director Zhong Yi said the association was aware that Malaysia wishes to rename the pandas, which are now called Fu Wa and Feng Yi.

“However, we would like to be clear about the meaning of the names picked for them as pandas are very important animals to us,” he told Berita Harian.

The 10-year loan will be made in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Zhong said the loan would not only make the pandas “China's ambassadors to Malaysia” representing friendly ties between the two countries, it would also help create awareness among Malaysians on conservation efforts for the almost extinct animals.

Zhong said there are currently approximately 1,600 pandas living in the wild, and 328 in captivity.

He said that a date had not been set to bring the pandas over to Malaysia.
