For the first time in South-east Asia, European Red Bull will be holding a contest where 40 teams of wacky and creative pilots are expected to fly their man-made aircraft.

The Red Bull Flugtag (pronounced "floog-tag"), or "flying day" in German, will be held on Oct 28 at Siloso Beach in Sentosa.

Singaporeans will be given a chance to design, build and pilot human-powered flying machines off a 6-metre high flight deck.

"Come event day, we will transform Siloso Beach into Singapore's newest airport terminal that will see the craziest flying machines take off.

"We are also calling on Singapore to break the German world record for the longest flight of 69.79m and we think we are up to this task! It will be a great day out for all Singaporeans to remember," said a Red Bull spokesperson.

The record for the longest flight of 69.79 metres was set on May 28 this year in Mainz, Germany, in front of more than 150,000 people.

The competition was first held in Austria in 1992 and by the end of 2011, there have been a total of 108 Flugtags, some of which include rockets, wedding cakes and even life-sized hand gliders.

About 50,000 people are expected to attend the Sentosa event that day.

A total of 40 teams will be selected. Each team will be made up of one pilot and three team assistants.

These teams will be judged by a panel of judges against three criteria: Flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship.

The winning team will be taken on a trip worth $14,000 to Salzburg, Austria to visit Red Bull's Hangar-7, the home of the Flying Bulls, and other fleet of airplanes and choppers. The winning pilot will also be treated to a skydiving package.

First runners-up will get flights to a destination of their choice in Europe, worth $5,000, and the third-placed team gets a tandem skydive experience outside of Singapore skies, worth over $2,500.
