SINGAPORE - Jurong Bird Park is the first in South-east Asia and the second institution in the world to successfully breed the king bird-of-paradise.
The two chicks hatched on May 18, bringing the total number of bird-of-paradise at the Bird Park to five.
Jurong Bird Park first attempted to breed the king bird-of-paradise in 2010. However, one egg by a breeding pair broke and the other was infertile. The female king bird-of-paradise was also observed to be throwing eggs out of the nest due to her inexperience.
In 2011, the breeding pair was then moved to another aviary that was not on exhibition but no successful hatchings were achieved until a year later in 2012.
Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) said in a press release that the bird park's keepers tried to use a different method to help them breed by using a nest that had been abandoned by another female king-of-paradise.
The present 'mother' accepted the nest and laid two eggs soon after, WRS said.
"Breeding and taking care of birds is not an exact science, and it took two years of dedication and keen observation by our keepers to achieve this," said Mr Raja Segran, General Manager of Jurong Bird Park.
Visitors may visit the Bird Park to view the smallest and most vividly coloured bird-of-paradise.
