Hotels embrace National Day spirit

As Singapore gears up for its 47th birthday, hotels and restaurants are joining in the celebrations with National Day-themed promotions.

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), which is holding National Day promotions for the third time since it opened in 2010, has a special $47 rate (instead of the usual $79) for entry to both Universal Studios Singapore and the Maritime Experiential Museum.

Its hotels will also hang a national flag in every window, a tradition that started in 2010, said RWS assistant director of communications Robin Goh.

The Mount Faber Leisure Group is organising a Sundown Buffet Dinner, free for guests who are as old as Singapore, and a full-day "Angry Birds Family Carnival".

Over on Orchard Road, Orchard Hotel has a $4.70 buffet at its Orchard Cafe featuring Singapore food - rojak, laksa and black pepper mud crab, and D24 durian mousse cake for dessert - available to every second diner dressed in a patriotic red.

Closer to the National Day Parade (NDP) venue, Overeasy - a diner bar at One Fullerton which has an unblocked view of the NDP fireworks - is expecting an influx of guests. Hence, on top of a special National Day set dinner, it is imposing a minimum spend requirement of at least $98 per person, and at least $25 in cover charges for walk-in guests.

"Even right now, the outdoor seating is almost fully booked," said restaurant supervisor Nicholas Ng, adding that the restaurant has only five more tables available out of 33. Most of the bookings have been made by families looking to have a fireworks outing, he said, estimating an extra $4,000 in revenue compared to average nights.

The Ritz Carlton is also seeing brisk business. "We first received reservations as early as a year ago," said its public relations director Cheryl Ng, adding that room reservations so far have been comparable to previous years. "There are very few rooms left."
