A Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne was held up by a problem - an XL-sized one.

An Australian couple threw a tantrum after the airline couldn't provide the first-class XL-sized pyjamas they wanted.

They complained to the flight crew as the A380 was preparing to taxi from the terminal, the Herald Sun reported on Friday.

Psychologist Dr Peter Hart and his wife Ann insisted on the First-class pyjamas designed by Akira Isogawa.

Unhappy with the alternative of business-class pyjamas designed by Peter Morrissey, the pair chose not to fly.

They left the plane, which was carrying more than 400 passengers, and the 15-hour flight was delayed for 30 minutes while their baggage was offloaded.

Flight QF94 eventually arrived in Melbourne on time.

Business-class passenger Angela Ceberano said the cabin erupted in laughter when the captain announced the reason for the delay.

"He said: 'Just to inform you all, the reason we've had the delay is because two of our first-class passengers refused to fly on this plane as there was no extra large pyjamas on board for them'," Ms Ceberano said.

Dr Hart had apparently told the crew: "Make sure you tell everyone why we're so late: they didn't have pyjamas for us."

Ms Ceberano said: "In his mind, he thought everyone sympathised with him.

"If you didn't laugh, you would have cried. It was unbelievable."

Another passenger, identified only as Ian, said passengers in first class could not believe what they were hearing.

"They (the couple) were quite upset and simply refused to fly without pyjamas that fitted," he said.

"In the end they disembarked and the flight was delayed as their baggage was removed."

On Friday, a Qantas spokesman confirmed an incident had occurred in Los Angeles, but refused to give details.

"Two passengers elected to get off an aircraft just prior to departure in LA overnight," the spokesman said.

"Other passengers were unaffected, with the flight touching down in Melbourne this morning on schedule."

The couple arrived home a day late - and surprisingly praised Qantas.

They were escorted through the international arrival gates at Melbourne Airport by a chauffeur, an hour and 20 minutes after their plane landed, before they were driven away in a black Chrysler.

Dr Hart said: "Qantas has been fantastic. Their customer service has been exceptional. Please direct all questions to Qantas."

A Qantas spokesman said yesterday: "These passengers are extremely loyal and frequent flyers with Qantas and we will be making sure that everything is as it should be next time they fly with us."
