SINGAPORE - Some 20 merchants and property owners along the Singapore River have banded together to form a new group which aims to breathe more life into the waterfront.
The group, called Singapore River One (SRO), comprises stakeholders from Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay.
Speaking at the group's launch yesterday, SRO's protem chairman, Mr Wilson Tan - who is also the director of CapitaLand Retail Management - noted that recent data from the Singapore Tourism Board showed just 18 per cent of tourists visited the Singapore River.
The group aims to at least double visitorship to the Singapore River over the next couple of years. "We want to depict (the) river's very rich history and heritage," he said, adding that the group wants to "make the Singapore River a must-go destination".
The SRO revealed a five-year business blueprint, leveraging on the three quays' architecture and entertainment and dining outlets, to make the 3km waterfront more attractive to visitors.
In the future, visitors can look forward to more connectivity between the quays, which will include better signage to make link-points between quays more obvious.
A range of events are also in the works. The Singapore River Festival, last held in 2010, for instance, could be brought back with a new focus.
