INDONESIA - In the run up to Idul Fitri, which is expected to fall on Sunday and Monday this year, Yogyakarta getting spruced up to welcome homebound travelers and tourists.
The city's most popular tourist street, Jl. Malioboro, is one of the areas slated for a makeover.
"We will remove planters on the street and will create parks. We will clean up the streets so that the pedestrians feel more comfortable," Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti said.
The local administration will also create 17 new crosswalks and remove outdated billboards.
The mayor said that officials asked drivers to keep their vehicles below 40 kilometers an hour when passing on Jl. Malioboro, where tourists often stop to look at the offerings of street vendors.
Meanwhile, residents of nearby Bantul cleaned up the pine forest, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, while handicraft makers in Imogiri have been offering packages for the Idul Fitri tourists.
Immaroh, the chairman of the Sri Kumoro Batik Makers Association, said that tourists could pay as little as Rp 25,000 (S$3.25) to Rp 50,000 to join a batik-making session.
Handicraft makers are offering packages, like batik-making sessions.
