TAIWAN: With more and more travelers looking for cheap flight tickets, nine foreign budget airlines are already operating in Taiwan and two more are set to enter the local market in the next two months, according to a local media report yesterday.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) noted that except for a few cases, these value airlines have a seat occupancy rate of more than 70 percent, according to the United Evening News.

Budget tickets are cheap but passengers do not get the same services they would expect from regular airlines. There are luggage charges and no free drinks, food or entertainment.

The value airlines already in the local market operate flights between Taiwan and other parts of Asia, such as Malaysia, Japan and South Korea.

The airlines include Jetstar, Tiger Airways, Air Asia X, Air Asia, T'way Air, Air Busan, Jin Air, Eastar Jet and Cebu Pacific, according to the CAA.

Two more will start offering services in the next two months: SCOOT and Peach Aviation.

SCOOT is set to run flights from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Singapore on Sept. 18, with three flights per week initially, the United Evening News said.

Starting from Oct. 28, there will one flight to Singapore daily, with a round trip ticket costing NT$6,500, tax included, the paper said.

The paper said the tickets are more than NT$3,000 cheaper than those from Taiwan-based airlines.

On Oct. 16, Japan's Peach Aviation will offer flights between Taoyuan and Osaka at about NT$4,500 for a single trip, the paper said.

Faced with increased competition from foreign budget airlines, Taiwan-based airline companies stressed that they target different market segments from their competitors, according to the paper.

But more choices for travelers will stimulate the tourism market, they were cited as saying.
