JOHOR BARU: In a grand ceremony at the theme park, the Sultan of Johor today declared Legoland Malaysia officially open.

Sultan Ibrahim Ismail was joined by Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak and hundreds of invited guests, who together witnessed fireworks at the first international theme park in Malaysia.

The Johor Sultan presented entrance tickets worth up to RM500,000 (S$200,770) to 17 underprivileged schools and orphanages in Johor.

During the ceremony, he was given a portrait created from 12,600 Lego bricks. Similar portraits were also presented to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister.

Legoland Malaysia is the first Legoland park in Asia and the sixth in the world.

It has more than 40 rides, shows and attractions that spread over 76 acres of land. More than 50 million Lego bricks were used to make the models that are present in the park.

Future plans are in place for Legoland Malaysia to be the largest family destination resort in Southeast Asia.

A water park and hotel are already under construction and will be opening in 2013 and 2014.
