SINGAPORE - White Orchid Hotel in Bangkok, which Singapore-listed Hotel Royal acquired last year, is undergoing a major $20 million upgrading and is to be re-branded as Hotel Royal Bangkok @ Chinatown.
"It is necessary to maximise the hotel's prime commercial location in the heart of Bangkok's Chinatown," said Hotel Royal. The upgrading will be funded by internal fund and bank borrowing. Due to start at the end of this month, the upgrading will take about 10 to 12 months to complete.
During this time, the hotel will be closed for business. But the two ground-floor retail shops at the hotel will remain in operation as they have separate entrances. "This will allow the hotel to continue to generate some rental revenue," it said.
The upgrading for the hotel, which has been around for 30 years, will involve the replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment, the building of additional facilities such as a swimming pool and gymnasium, as well as work on public areas and guest rooms.
Hotel Royal completed the acquisition of the hotel in October last year as part of its plan to expand into regional markets.
The hotel is about one kilometre from Hualamphong MRT Station and Bangkok Rail Station, and is close to major tourist attractions.It houses 315 suites and rooms, together with conference room facilities, 110 car parking bays and two food and beverages outlets.
Hotel Royal purchased the hotel hotel from Lucky Hotel Company for about $20.5 million.
Shares in Hotel Royal closed unchanged at $2.60 on Friday.
