They seek cheaper flights amid economic slowdown

SINGAPORE-Low-cost carriers (LCCs) such as Tiger Airways are flying high as business travellers continue to opt for cheaper seats amid the economic slowdown.
“We’ve seen an increase in business travel. About 15 per cent of our passengers are business travellers,” Rosalynn Tay, managing director of Tiger Airways Singapore, said at the airline’s anniversary celebration yesterday.
Tiger hit the 10 million passenger mark yesterday – just in time for its fifth anniversary.
“While the global downturn has dampened demand, Tiger Airways and other LCCs have stimulated regional travel by empowering more people to fly more often,” said Ken Low, assistant chief executive (marketing) for the Singapore Tourism Board.
LCCs account for about 15 per cent of passenger traffic at Changi Airport.
In September 2004, Tiger took to the skies with two aircraft, covering Bangkok, Phuket and Hat Yai.
It now serves 19 destinations across Asia, having built up its fleet here to nine aircraft.
In the past month, it has increased frequencies to Chennai and Bangalore in India and has plans to resume flights to Krabi and Hat Yai in Thailand.
As part of its anniversary celebrations, Tiger is offering 225,000 seats for travel to 15 Asian destinations, with fares starting from five cents one way – plus taxes.
