Stranded on Penang Hill

Holiday makers now have second thoughts about going up again.

GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA: About 500 holidaymakers were stranded on Penang Hill for about three hours following an electrical problem in the engine room at the upper station.

The tourists, who were stranded from 6.45pm, were transported to the lower station in Air Itam in batches by two buses and five four-wheel drive vehicles from 8.30pm.

Banker Mohd Zamri Ahmad Zakri, 41, from Kuala Lumpur, who was with six other family members, was among the first batch of 150 tourists brought to the lower station in a bus.

Some of the holidaymakers getting off the train at 10.45pm on Monday.

“My family and I were on the last train up the hill but when we reached the middle station we were asked to get down and then to get back on again. The train made five stops before reaching the upper station for more than an hour,” he said.

Housewife Lee Foong Lan, 65, also from Kuala Lumpur, who had waited since 4.30pm for eight of her family members, said she found out that a train was stranded after being informed by a Taiwanese tourist.

After yesterday’s incident, Lee said she would now think twice before going up Penang Hill.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik said the upgrading work of the funicular railway system would start on Oct 28 and was expected to be completed in a year.

It is funny how often this funicular system breaks down. A funicular works like a pulley based on gravity: One goes up while the other goes down. The railcars meet each other halfway, unlike Hong Kong's Victoria's. Sad.
