NEW DELHI - Air India said that about half of its international flights had been cancelled due to a strike by pilots on Tuesday which entered a fourth day after negotiations to end the dispute broke down.
Nine out of 21 international flights and 37 out of 177 domestic flights had been cancelled, said spokesman Jitender Bhargava, after pilots in three major cities called in sick to protest a slash in performance-based incentive pay.
Talks between the company and the non-unionised senior pilots ended in a stalemate on Monday night, an Air India statement said.
The airline said the pilots' refusal to accept cuts in productivity-linked bonuses was "unacceptable" but that "all options are being kept open."
But chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav told reporters there was no chance of a lockout and urged pilots who had called in sick to "come back quickly and restore normalcy for the benefit of the passengers."
The cost-saving measures have been introduced to ease pressure on the ailing company, which posted a US 875-million-dollar loss in the last financial year.
Last week the airline announced cuts of 25 to 50 per cent in productivity incentives for more than 7,000 employees, including top management.
The Civil Aviation ministry has said it would support Air India's restructuring efforts if the pilots ended their strike.
The disruption follows a five-day "sick leave" strike by pilots at Jet Airways, India’s second-largest private airline, earlier this month over a dispute about the sacking of two senior pilots.
