GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - The funicular train service at Penang Hill is up and running again, some seven hours after a tree fell onto the tracks between the middle and lower stations on Tuesday.
State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said the trunk and branches were removed by 3.15am yesterday.
He said the cargo cart, attached to the funicular train, was also placed back on the tracks after it derailed during heavy rain at 7.55pm.
“No one was hurt and there was no serious damage to the railway track. The cargo cart derailed when the train driver hit the emergency brake,” he said when contacted yesterday.
The incident left about 70 tourists and local residents stranded for 45 minutes.
The passengers were later transported down the hill using a jeep via the tar road located next to the Botanic Gardens.
Lim described it as a rare incident.
“The hill railway operator deploys its workers to inspect the tracks daily before the service commences,” he said.
Lim said a contractor, appointed to upgrade the service, had taken possession of the hill railways on Oct 28 this year.
The incident occurred just one day after the hill resort was voted the state’s top tourist destination in an online poll.
Some 1,090 users who took part in an online poll on the state government portal www.visitpenang.gov.my had listed the hill as Penang’s favourite tourist destination.
