PAHANG, MALAYSIA - PAHANG has given iconic status to 10 places, including Cameron Highlands, Genting Highlands, Fraser's Hill, the National Park and the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, in efforts to promote tourism, the state assembly was told yesterday.
State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif said 85 tourism projects worth RM70 million (S$28.7 million) would be ready by next year.
For instance, he said, RM9 million, allocated under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, had been spent on a facelift for Fraser's Hill.
He said RM3.5 million will be spent on promoting heritage arts and craft, including woodwork and khat writings.
During the debate earlier, the assembly was told that 14,000 state bumiputera entrepreneurs had received RM103 million in loans from Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usahawan Niaga (Tekun) since it was set up in 1998.
State Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Ishak Muhamad said Tekun was planning moves to get borrowers to pay up on time.
