ELEVEN theme parks in Asia have partnered with Hong Kong’s Ocean Park (HKOP) to offer reciprocal discounts on tickets, in a bid to compete with upcoming Disneyland developments in the region, the Shin Min Daily News reported over the weekend.
The “Ocean Park’s World Attractions Fun Deals”, announced last week, will give ticket holders and annual pass holders 10 to 15 per cent discounts at the partnering theme parks in China, Taiwan and Singapore.
According to Shin Min, the move is a battle for market share in the face of Shanghai Disneyland’s 2014 debut and the expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, which is set for a year-end completion date.
Starting from Dec 1, the reciprocal arrangement also means visitors from the other 11 attractions, like members of Singapore’s Zoo, Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari will also enjoy entry discounts to Ocean Park.
Other participating parks include the Beijing Aquarium, Shenzhen OCT Happy Valley, Panyu Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, and the Hualien Farglory Ocean Park in Taiwan – attractions which rank high on the edutainment factor, showcasing animals and nature.
Ms Ruth Lim, Marketing & Communications Manager, Sino-America Tours said besides acting as a mutual tourism driver for the participating countries, the partnership will also benefit visitors with children.
The total cost of taking a family to the theme park is not cheap, so a discount will go a long way, she told Shin Min.
But whether such a partnership will be effective in competing with Disneyland, Ms Lim said it depends on the future developments of the theme parks, like newer and better facilities, activities and programmes.
