HSINCHU, Taiwan - Taiwan's high-speed rail's free magazine has stirred controversy by ranking “betel nut girls” as a must-visit attraction in Hsinchu City. Police said they will strictly enforce laws on any “betel nut girl” wearing revealing clothing.
In the January issue of the high speed rail magazine, “betel nut girls” on Hsinchu's Zhongua Road, have been ranked in the top five must-see tourist attractions in the city.
The use of scantily-clad young women to sell betel nuts or cigarettes behind a brightly lit glass window has been a significant part of the Taiwanese betel nut culture.
According to the Hsinchu City Police Department Commander, Chen Chun-cheng, betel nut vendors on Zhongua Road do not employ many scantily-dressed girls compared to other sections of the city.
He added most “betel nut girl” in revealing dresses are seen behind the windows alongside Gongdao Fifth Road, and Section one and two of Jingguo Road, due to more business competition.
In addition, there have been around 20 penalties issued for similar cases since the latter half of 2009, said Chen.
The Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation publishes the magazine called “T-Life” free-of-charge for speed rail riders.
