Those going to the United States now have a helping hand in the form of TripAdvisor.com's fifth annual list of the country’s top 10 dirtiest hotels.

NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS - Dirty sheets, unswept corners and, worst of all, bugs, are the bane of any traveller entering a hotel room.
But those going to the United States now have a helping hand in the form of TripAdvisor.com’s fifth annual list of the country’s top 10 dirtiest hotels, reported CNN.
The Heritage Marina in San Francisco grabbed the unenviable top spot, said the network. The hotel – whose website bills it as “one of San Francisco’s best values” – has 320 reviews on TripAdvisor.com, with half the reviewers rating it as “terrible”.
The hotel’s general manager said the rankings were based on “subjective, irate, anonymous postings” that did not reflect the true condition of the hotel nor the opinions of the thousands of guests who have stayed there.
While last year’s dirtiest hotels list contained zero hotels from California, this year three California contenders made the list. Miami and Virginia Beach also delivered two hair-raising hotels each to this year’s list.
New York City cleaned up its act this year, with just one hotel on the list, down from three in 2009.
While the New York Inn (# 6) has now blemished the list four times in the past five years, the three-time #1 dirtiest hotel in America, New York City’s Hotel Carter, doesn’t appear at all this year.
TripAdvisor.com’s list is based on reviews posted on the website by travellers, who are asked to rate a hotel’s cleanliness on a scale of one to five.
It then takes data submitted from January to December and sorts it using the cleanliness category to come up with the rankings for the year, said CNN.
