TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taxi passengers in Taipei will have to pay extra fares during the Chinese New Year holidays, transport officials said yesterday.
Starting from midnight of Feb. 10 to midnight of Feb. 21, all taxi rides will be charged under the nighttime extra fare scheme, the officials said.
There are two taxi fare schemes in Taipei: daytime fares apply to rides from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., while nighttime fares, which are higher, are applicable between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day.
During the upcoming holidays, passengers will also have to pay an extra NT$20 (S$0.90) for each daytime ride, and an extra NT$40 for each nighttime ride, the officials said.
The officials explained that daytime and nighttime rides are defined by the time when the passengers get in the taxi.
Passengers who get in a cab at 10:50 p.m., for example, and get off at 11:20 p.m. will only have to pay an extra NT$20, the officials said. Passengers who get in a taxi at 5:50 a.m. and get off at 6:20 a.m. will have to pay an extra NT$40, the officials added.
The officials asked passengers to report any incidents of overcharge or other violations via the “1999” hotline.
