JOHOR BARU - The auto-gate system that speeds up the verification of passports of individuals travelling in and out of the country has been down for about a week. The Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complexes here have been hit by an unspecified system failure, forcing travellers to have their passports verified manually.
All information technology experts from the Immigration's Information Technology Department had been mobilised to resolve the problem, said state Immigration director Nasri Ishak.
Nasri said the system of late would suddenly go on the blink without warning.
The breakdown has inconvenienced those commuting to and from Singapore daily for work through the CIQs at the Sultan Iskandar Building at the Causeway and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex at the Second Link bridge.
"We have sought help from the Immigration headquarters (in Putrajaya) for a solution to the problem.
"However, we are still waiting for one from our IT Department," said Nasri when contacted yesterday.
He asked travellers for their patience and understanding.
"We need more time to ascertain the problem and we cannot say just yet when things will be back to normal.
"However, operations at both CIQs continue as usual."
Meanwhile, Immigration, Security and Passport Division director Ibrahim Abdullah confirmed that the department had been plagued with "on-again, off-again problems" nationwide for sometime now and was non-committal when asked when the system would be fully restored.
He advised Malaysians to go to immigration counters for passport checks for the time being.
