JOHOR BARU - The state recorded increased foreign tourists in the past week with over 300 hotel rooms filled in the city after international flights were cancelled because of the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud.
The majority of the tourists were scheduled to take their flights from neighbouring Singapore.
In Penang, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said that while the ash cloud had hampered air travel in Europe, some 1,000 tourists stranded in Singapore had come over to say in Johor hotels.
She said the cancellation of flights to Kuala Lumpur from Europe had been balanced out by the number of stranded tourists staying in the capital.
However, Dr Ng said tourism in Penang suffered because many people had cancelled their flights to the state, with the E & O Hotel only recording an occupancy rate of 40 per cent on Wednesday.
“We are monitoring the situation carefully but there is nothing much to be done since it is a natural occurrence,” she told reporters after announcing the new Penang MCA liaison committee line-up here yesterday.
Dr Ng said the ministry gave tourists stranded at the KL International Airport in Sepang a free one-day tour of the city yesterday while airport authorities arranged for them to bathe at a nearby hotel and be provided with subsidised meals.
Johor Tourism and Domestic Trade Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said the tourists opted for accommodation in the city as the rooms were much cheaper compared to those in Singapore.
He said some of them took the opportunity to visit tourist spots like Desaru in Kota Tinggi for a “vacation” when waiting for their flights to be rescheduled.
“The incident is quite surprising but hotels here were able to accommodate the sudden spike in visitors,” he told reporters.
