The flight was supposed to take passengers from Atlanta to Charlotte, both cities in the United States, the Associated Press reported.

A passenger who spoke to the Associated Press said that she had noticed a couple of flies in the plane on the Monday flight, but did not think much of it.

But just as the plane was taxiing, passenger Donna Adamo told AP that she heard a passenger behind her refusing to take her seat and causing a commotion. The word "maggot" was also thrown into the conversation.

According to the AP report, Adamo had felt someone flick her hair and the passenger found a maggot on her, which she quickly flicked off herself.

The insects came from a passenger's carry-on bag which contained meat that was spoiled. AP reported that the pilot then announced that the flight would turn back because of a "minor emergency on board".

Adamo told AP that flight attendants then told all passengers to sit down as the plane returned to the gate, but had felt uncomfortable after her initial encounter with the insects and seeing more maggots around her.

Passengers were asked to alight and a crew boarded to clean up the mess, the report stated. The flight then resumed and continued to Charlotte, after which it was taken out of service and fumigated.

AP said in its report that the passenger who had brought the spoiled meat on board was put on another flight. Those who had connecting flights in Charlotte said that flights would be held for them, resulting in more delays than just the affected plane.
