TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taipei International Airport's newly renovated Terminal 1, which opened yesterday to international arrivals, received good marks from some of the first travelers who arrived there from an overseas destination.

Though the terminal still has work left to be done, some of the passengers on a flight arriving from Shanghai gave it an 85 on a scale of 100, praising the speed with which they got their bags and the improved displays around the facility.

"My wife and I feel lucky to be able to use the terminal's new arrival facilities. The lighting was really good, and there were people who helped me get my luggage," said Chung Shu-jen, who returned home after visiting the Shanghai Expo.

The old airport, known locally as Songshan Airport, is currently undergoing a three-phase renovation. The first phase was concluded with the partial renovation of Terminal 1, which originally handled domestic flights and international departures but will now handle all flights.

Some of its runways were also upgraded, enabling the airport to handle bigger double aisle aircraft such as the Airbus 330.

Phase 2 will consist of renovating part of Terminal 2, building connecting skybridges between the two terminals, and modernizing some runways and expanding waiting areas in Terminal 1.

Phase 3 will involve the completion of Terminal 2 and the addition of duty-free stores and check-in counters in Terminal 1.

When the project is completed in September 2011, international and domestic flight services will be separately handled in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Fang Hai-chin, who travels frequently between Taiwan and China, compared the newly renovated terminal favorably with Terminal 2.

He said the signs directing travelers around the airport were clear, the new baggage trolleys were much easier to control, and luggage could be claimed after only a two-minute wait.

Fang believed, however, that the airport still lagged behind other comparable international airports, and he suggested that officials travel to other airports in the region to get ideas on how to improve service.

Once the renovation project is complete, Terminal 1 will be expected to handle 1.8 million travelers per year, as the number of international flights increases from 70 to 126 per week, according to the airport.
