SINGAPORE - Tourists from India, Malaysia and China are likely to make more visits to Singapore in the next two years, according to a recent survey on travel intentions.

Two in ten travellers from India showed intention to visit Singapore in the Global Intentions Survey 2011 by Visa, making them the majority of potential visitors at 16 per cent.

Travellers from China and Malaysia also showed keen interest in visiting the island-state, with 10 per cent of the respondents from each country indicating interest.

“Singapore has great cultural diversity with a varied population which makes it a very desirable destination for travellers from different cultures and different parts of the world," said a Visa spokesperson.

The spokesperson also cited shopping as one of key factors in attracting overseas visitors to Singapore.

The survey also found that the availability of good travel deals (76%), the availability of natural scenery (75%) as well as political stability (72%) are factors that influence travellers' choices when they think of visiting Singapore.

Food is a primary attraction as some 74 per cent of respondents showed willingness to pay extra for a quality meal, with many willing to pay a premium for convenience and hassle-free services.

61 per cent of respondents surveyed look forward to sampling the local cuisine, while 55 per cent intend to experience the local nightlife in Singapore.

The research also shows that tourist expenditure is set to go up within the next two years.

Visitors spent an average of $2,190 in their last leisure trip; but according to Visa, this figure is likely to increase by 9 per cent to $2,381 on their next visit.
