"Reading the article on tour agency cancelling package tour at the 11th hour, and realising it was the same tour agency Jun-Air that cancelled my trip to Taiwan, resulting in a fouled holiday mood, would like to seek suggestions on the tour agencies to black-list/avoid booking our tours with in order to avoid unnecessary outrage and disappointment please," Shawn Ng
first of all, do your research - google and yahoo the travel agent you wish to buy a package with. if they are dodgy or have bad track records, it'll show up, whether in an online forum or news articles. ask friends as well about their experiences. i don't think there's a blacklist around (if you have one, pass it to me too!). there's a 'good' list, of the Natas-case accredited agencies, so you might want to buy a package from them. http://www.natas.travel/page_news1.aspx?id=36 Happy holidays :D

Why not jsut stay in
Singapore
and bring them to the IRs!
China is known for their tourist traps. But I would like to highlight this one in Beijing- a developed part of China. It was apparently a tourist attraction- The Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. My friend and I were separated and taken into different rooms where we were told that there would be a free consultation. The physician took my pulse and told me that I had a bad liver. I needed to purchase these bottle of miracle pills. I would see then see the effect in 2 weeks time. After awhile, my friend and my other tour mates came out. We realised that we ALL had the same liver problem! I came back to
Singapore
and got the pills tested. Apparently they were just normal vitamin pills.
Be careful when buying stones and jewellery from Factory in China, they tell the same story everytime when a bus load of tourists are brought there. 'U are lucky today our Boss in the factory, you can get very good discount 80 to 90%, if you ignore they can let go any stones @S$50. We experienced this once in Beijing and the same trick in Hainan Island when we joined their local tour. In the group, I met a local couple told us to be careful, they have been telling the tourists the same story, she has been cheated earlier, once when they first time brought friends from Canada, They will separate locals and tourists before they start their nonsense. We got the namecards - same group, the bosses same first and second name only last name is different - maybe they are family.

Hi all, I'm looking for warm thermal clothings for trekking in the cold that can withstand at least -30deg for the body. Any suggestions as to where I can get them? (preferably in
Singapore
)
There's a shop called Winter Time at IMM and 313 Somerset (the new shopping centre just about Somerset MRT station). They have decently priced winter wear. But not sure if its sufficient for your -30 deg, but worth checking out. Where are you heading to? haha.

and I want to try going for a ski holiday, but to go to the Alps in France or to Switzerland is going to cost a bomb. Where's good for skiing in Asia?
Yes, there are great ski resorts in Asia. Contrary to the popular belief, skiing = snow = only in European countries. In Korea, Yongpyong Resort is the most popular ski resort there. It is well known holding several successful international events, such as the World Cup Ski Contest and Winter Asian Games. If you travel to Seoul, Seoul Resort is the closest ski resort to Seoul. The rental fees for the lifts can go up to 43,000won (S$47) for adults, cheapest being 30,000 won (S$33). For children, expect rental prices from 9,500won (S$9) to 14,000won (S$15).
I've been reading about backpacking in travel magazines and I wish to backpack someday, most probably in SE.Asia. As a beginner in backpacking, any tips that I should keep in mind?
For adventure and great scenery, go to either of these 3 places. The scenery is amazing and what makes up the country are the smiley people and their cultural values. For Laos, I recommend that you concentrate in North Laos as it is much cheaper than in the South. Also, getting off the track in remote villages should let you enjoy prices like they were 3 years ago. Remember to great people whom you meet in Laos "Sabaidy" before you start talking. It would be considered impolite otherwise. It may cost a little bit more but backpacking is more about the adventure than the money. There's plenty to see/do, cheap, easy and fairly safe.
I've been reading about backpacking in travel magazines and I wish to backpack someday, most probably in SE.Asia. As a beginner in backpacking, any tips that I should keep in mind?
I usually spend 3 weeks travelling around a country. Before you set off, I suggest that you do your homework to know about the country's sites of interests. A good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide will give you all the facts that you require to plan an itinerary. Here are some things that I recommend you should pack: 1) Bring a cheap phone that you're not attached to 2) Camera with multiple memory cards 3) A microfiber towel (it's humid in SE.Asia) 4) A sarong (useful when it's cold or when you're visiting temples/places of worship) 5) Anything that you're comfortable wearing at home Do not bring fancy, thief-attracting stuff. Once stolen, it might just dampen your spirits to enjoy your first backpacking trip.
