Fake Stones

rate [ 0 ]

Be careful when buying stones and jewellery from Factory in China, they tell the same story everytime when a bus load of tourists are brought there. 'U are lucky today our Boss in the factory, you can get very good discount 80 to 90%, if you ignore they can let go any stones @S$50. We experienced this once in Beijing and the same trick in Hainan Island when we joined their local tour. In the group, I met a local couple told us to be careful, they have been telling the tourists the same story, she has been cheated earlier, once when they first time brought friends from Canada, They will separate locals and tourists before they start their nonsense. We got the namecards - same group, the bosses same first and second name only last name is different - maybe they are family.

Winter time for winter time

There's a shop called Winter Time at IMM and 313 Somerset (the new shopping centre just about Somerset MRT station). They have decently priced winter wear. But not sure if its sufficient for your -30 deg, but worth checking out. Where are you heading to? haha.

Laos during CNY

rate [ 1 ]

Head to Xieng Khouang province to visit the Plain of Jars, a historic cultural site eight hours from Luang Prabang by bus.

Scattered over the plateau in the province are jar-like stones, which researchers believe were used in the past as urns or to store food.

Do not stray from designated paths at this archaeological site - there might be unexploded bombs from the war in the 1960s at unauthorised sites.

Also, visit Vang Vieng, a six-hour bus ride from Luang Prabang (around US$10 or S$14), or a four-hour ride from Vientiane (US$3 to US$5). The province is known for its limestone karst terrain, which is honeycombed with unexplored tunnels and caverns.

The Nam Song River there is popular with adventurous types who might want to kayak or ride a tube down the river. It is surrounded by picturesque limestone cliffs and formations.

Trip to Macau

rate [ 1 ]

If you are not planning to gamble, you might run out of sightseeing spots pretty quickly.

The city's main square, Largo do Senado, has many street hawkers whom you can visit to satisfy hunger pangs.

You can also view pretty Portuguese architecture and cobblestone streets in the area.

Macau also has good beaches. Hac Sa Beach on Coloane Island may be the best.

The 4km black sand beach offers water activities such as water skiing and is also known for Lord Stow's Bakery, famous for its mouthwatering Portuguese egg tarts.

For other typical Macau snacks such as a juicy pork chop bun, go to Cafe Tai Lei Loi Kei (Rua Direita Carlos Eugenio, Taipa). Go early to queue up - its popular buns are available only from 3 to 5pm.

The 3 1/2-star hotel provides only a queen-sized bed for its self-contained hotel rooms and is suitable for up to three people. Additional beds cost extra.

Its proximity to shopping malls and entertainment centres in Brisbane City is a bonus.

Slightly more expensive is Park Regis North Quay (www.parkregishotels.com/hotels/brisbane/park-regis-north-quay), which offers a great view of the Brisbane River.

There are one- and two-bedroom apartments from A$115. All include full kitchen facilities, Internet access and a DVD player to keep your kids occupied.
